How Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) Works

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy delivers highly concentrated oxygen under pressure.

The pressured oxygen particles reduce in size, enabling them to fully infuse the plasma (liquid) part of the blood. This means that oxygen now supersaturates the cells of the entire body.

The oxygen, with its healing and energising power, can now penetrate deeper and further into the system. Parts of the body that are affected by illness or injury often receive little or no oxygen, so they can greatly benefit from this supersaturation.

It has been measured that, in the chamber, oxygen concentration levels in the blood rise dramatically quickly.

For this reason, hyperbaric oxygen chambers are used in hospitals to give fast, emergency treatment to people with life-threatening and debilitating conditions that need immediate remedy.

This supersaturation with vital oxygen creates the regeneration of blood cells and also makes new blood vessels. The fine network of vessels, like the root system of a tree, is then able to carry more nutrients to the entire body system. The blood can also do more efficiently its vital job of delivering hormones and removing waste.

Regular sessions are recommended to maintain the beneficial effect of the oxygen therapy and build up its benefits over time.

Creating significant changes in the body can takes a while, especially for patterns or conditions that have become established over time. For this reason, we generally recommend intensive programs in order to see the desired changes.

We suggest about ten sessions for pain and musculo-skeletal problems and for pre and post op recovery. For more complicated conditions, 20 - 40 sessions are suggested.

The experience in the chamber

For a treatment session, you are helped and guided at every step by a trained professional.

When sitting inside the chamber, with its comfortable interior and lighting, you breathe in the oxygen through a mask and, as the pressure gradually increases, you may feel your ears pop, as during a plane take-off. This can be relieved by yawning or swallowing and the sensation soon subsides.

You have contact with the operative, who gradually adjusts pressure, with your feedback, to a therapeutic level. You are then invited to relax and breathe in the oxygen for about an hour, many people relax by having a rest, meditating or reading, even watching a film on their phone
